The History of Millstone

Millstone Heating & Sheet Metal was founded in January 1997 by Paul Miller and Grant Stonehouse after purchasing equipment from Griffiths Plumbing in Duncan. They began in a modest 1,200 sq. ft. shop off Sprott Road. Within just nine months, they outgrew the space and moved into a 2,000 sq. ft. unit in the same complex. A year later, continued growth pushed them into a 4,500 sq. ft. shop—again, in the same area. At that point, their team had grown to 6 staff members and a bookkeeper.

A few years later, they were fortunate to purchase the property where our current shop now stands. The two men started operations in a Quonset building, which they insulated themselves to make it usable. As business continued to expand, they invested in a plasma cutter, a power shear, and a press brake to boost in-house capabilities.

Over time, they received three donated buildings from Peter Ballet, one of which was 16’ x 64’ with two lean-tos. Later, they added a 3,200 sq. ft. building to support growing operations. Their service area expanded rapidly, with projects ranging from Victoria all the way up to Port Hardy. One of their most notable jobs was the recreation centre at the Comox Air Base.

In 2003, Grant became the sole owner after buying out Paul. By 2006—just one day before Grants 65th birthday—he sold the business to Randy Price, marking the beginning of the next chapter in Millstone’s history.

Where We Are Now

Today, Millstone Heating & Sheet Metal operates out of a 15,000 sq. ft. facility, equipped to handle projects of every size and complexity. What started as a small shop with a few machines has grown into one of Vancouver Island’s leading HVAC and Sheet Metal Contractors.

In 2022 we joined SMWIA Local276 Union and now have a talented team of over 45 highly trained HVAC and sheet metal professionals, supported by 7 dedicated office staff who manage and oversee every project with precision and care.

As part of our recent expansion, we’re proud to have added a skilled refrigeration team to our roster—enhancing our ability to serve a wider range of commercial and industrial clients with complete mechanical solutions under one roof.

Currently, we’re managing more than 35 active projects, ranging from multi-family residential developments to large-scale commercial and industrial builds. Our in-house fabrication capabilities allow us to deliver custom, cost-effective solutions on tight timelines—all while maintaining the highest quality standards.

As we continue to grow, we remain ambitious and driven—always ready to take on more, push the limits of what we can do, and serve our clients with the same pride and professionalism that built this company from day one.
